The Level 1 Award in Skills for Professions in Animal Care has been developed to provide a flexible approach to study using a range of vocational units in animal care combined with optional units in learning skills. The qualifications are suitable for use in a range of learning situations and lend themselves to the development of individualised learning programmes. The qualifications have been designed to provide the study skills and introductory vocational knowledge to learners who wish to progress within the field of animal care, but who may not yet be at a Level 2 standard. The qualification providing them with foundational knowledge and study skills necessary for progression in the field.
The Level 1 Award and Certificate in Skills for Professions in Animal Care have been developed to provide learners with the foundational skills and knowledge required to pursue further studies or enter the workforce in the field of animal care.
The Level 1 Award carries a credit value of 9 credits and requires learners to complete a total of 81 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) within a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 90 hours.
These qualifications are regulated by Ofqual and are registered on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), ensuring that they meet rigorous standards of quality and consistency in education and training. With no specific entry requirements, these qualifications offer accessibility to learners of all backgrounds and ages who are interested in pursuing a career or further study in animal care.
The assessment process for this qualification involves several key steps to ensure learners’ understanding and competency in both animal care and study skills:
Internally Set Assessments: Learners are assessed through activities internally set by tutor/assessors. These activities are designed to meet the assessment criteria of the unit and may include written assignments, practical demonstrations, or presentations.
Portfolio Compilation: Learners compile portfolios of assessed evidence, which may include completed assignments, observations, or records of practical tasks related to animal care and study skills.
Internal Moderation: Portfolios of assessed evidence are internally moderated at the Centre to ensure consistency and fairness in assessment practices. Internal moderators review the assessment decisions made by tutor/assessors to uphold quality standards.
External Moderation: Following internal moderation, the portfolios of assessed evidence are externally moderated by an OCN London External Moderator. This external moderation process provides an additional layer of quality assurance and ensures that assessment decisions align with national standards.
No Additional External Assessment: There is no additional external examination or assessment for this qualification beyond the portfolio compilation and moderation process.
The qualifications are for learners of all ages who wish to progress in animal care. They offer an opportunity to develop essential study skills along with vocational units to create a firm foundation for successful progression to Level 2 qualifications. The Award is ideal for learners who are not yet ready to commit to a larger qualification.
There are no specific entry requirements for these qualifications, however, providers must assess the suitability of units for younger learners before delivery and must be :
14-19 years old in full-time study;
• adults who wish to progress to higher level qualifications in animal care;
• currently employed in a role related to animal care and wish to progress;
• currently not in employment and looking to improve their future career prospects.
